Making decisions

One of the main objectives of meetings is to make decisions on behalf of the
club/federation. There are 3 main methods for making decisions in meetings,
depending on the type of meeting and the people involved.

                  1. Voting
                  • Assumes conflict is inevitable.
                  • Is a fast process.
                  • Any commitment to a decision is clear.

                  2. Consensus
                  • Assumes agreement is possible.
                  • Emphasises cooperation within the group.

                  3. Group think
                  • Assumes agreement is possible.
                  • Pressure to conform to the majority can be present.

                           Activity 2.9

                           Activity 2.10

                  • Would the method of decision making vary between an annual general meeting
                    and a subcommittee meeting?

                  • If so, which method would be used more in an annual general meeting and
which might be used more in a subcommittee meeting?

                  Annual general meeting

                  Subcommittee meeting
