Facility management

One reason that many sporting facilities have problems fulfilling their potential is
that they have insufficient or inexperienced management/staff. In relation to new
facilities, the development of a suitable facility management plan starts long before
the facility is built. For existing facilities without a management plan, it is very
important that one is developed and implemented.

                           Activity 5.8

Is it common for sporting/recreational facilities in your country to be built and then
poorly managed and maintained? If so, please give an example.

                  Facility management options
One part of a facility management plan (which you will develop later in this
module), is deciding on the best facility management option. These options
include leasing, contract management, a management committee or self-
                  management.

                  Leasing
Leasing is a facility management system that is often used by local government
authorities. In most cases the leasing only covers the operational aspects of
                  providing the facility.

The government (owner) will lease the management and operation of the facility to
a lessee for a fee. The lessee is then responsible for the effective management of
                  the facility.
