Event evaluation
Once you have hosted the event, it is very important to evaluate its effectiveness.
This way you know what went well and what did not. You can then develop
strategies to improve your next event.
You will need to ask yourself:
• What went well (successes)?
• Did the event achieve its goal or purpose?
• Did anything go wrong?
• How could I improve it for next time?
You need to evaluate 3 periods within the lifecycle of your event:
1. pre-event assessment
2. monitoring during the event
3. post-event evaluation.
Another important part of evaluating your event is the post-event debriefing. You
will need to cover the following areas:
• financial results
• marketing and public relations
• staff/volunteer performance
• venue suitability
• the benefit of hosting the event (financial, number of people coming into the
community, publicity, staff, security, presentation of facilities, post-event
legacies, etc.)
• a review of any incidents (injuries, complaints, etc.)
• athlete performances
• officiating performances
• effectiveness of your communication systems during the event
• attitude of your sponsors to the event.
