The facility approach to risk management

The facility has developed a detailed, yet useable risk management plan to ensure
that the quality of service provided is to the standard that the clients deserve
and to ensure that the clients and staff are operating in a safe environment. The
increasingly litigious nature of society, in combination with the medium to high-
risk nature of the fitness industry, require that the centre has specific policies and
procedures that are easily and regularly followed by all staff and clients.

In developing a specific risk management plan, the staff need to:
                  • identify risks and who is at risk (physical, financial, ethical/moral, legal)
                  • assess the severity of the risks
                  • design risk-reduction strategies
                  • implement the strategies
                  • review and modify the plan.

                  Staff training
All staff are to be trained in the area of risk management and the sport and
recreation industry. This training will occur annually and will be delivered by a risk
                  management consultant.

How the severity or risk is to be measured
Once potential risks have been identified, they need to be prioritised. This is
important, as the centre only has certain human and financial resources and not all
risks require the same risk reduction strategies. The centre needs to measure the
severity of the potential risk and allocate resources appropriately.

To assess and prioritise the risks identified, staff need to analyse the likelihood of
the risk occurring and if it does, the likely ramifications/outcomes. To do this, a
simple table can assist the staff to measure the likely severity of the risks and then
decide how to minimise their occurrence (see the next page).

The simplest manner in which the risk management processes of the centre can
be outlined is to present the risk management action plan for the centre (see the
                  next page).
