Hello Bob,
I am chairman of Chulmleigh SMBC
and our club enjoys passing the Indoor
Bowler round the members. Your article on
publicity prompted me to write. We have at
present 18 registered members (16 who
actually play) and 3 new unregistered.
Our numbers have plummeted over
the past couple of years due to all the
usual reasons, but recruitment is an ongo-
ing problem - even though Chulmleigh is
an expanding community with new house
building.
I have recently set up a club website:
www.chulmleighbowlsclub.org.uk, which once marketed a little more will hopefully become op-
erational on google etc. and drag us a little further into this electronic age! Any comments, sug-
gestions you may have will be gratefully received.
We have regular poster changes around the town and door drops but still reactions are
slow. Wallingbrook Health Centre held a Health & Welfare afternoon at the local Pavilion (where
we play) and we will be having a stall with vari-
ous leaflets, posters and equipment on display
and quite a few club members in attendance.
Hopefully this will attract some prospective play-
ers.
With this in mind I wonder whether you
have any pamphlets, booklets or advertising
paraphernalia which might be of help and we
can make use of. We will of course pay postage
costs. I have also asked Bonds Bowls for some
input and will visit them next week.
This Autumn the Pavilion floor is going to
be replaced with a more substantial surface
which ‘should’ help improve ours and visiting
teams’ games! We then hope to start organising competitions which will then result in being able
to support the Indoor Bowler with the occasional pictures and articles. To finish off - I don’t think
you are “piddling in the wind” - all us Short Mat players love the game but unfortunately trying
to attract the youngsters is an ongoing problem - but we will persevere.
All the best and keep up the good work

ED - the former development officer produced some great looking advertising leaflets. As I pre-
viously said, last year, at the ESMBA Annual General meeting, I asked to reproduce one in the
magazine but he refused. A decision I am still at a loss to understand, as he was the Develop-
ment Officer! However, he had just been voted out of office on the same day, so perhaps it was
understandable, or not as the case may be. I hope the ESMBA still have them but you will need
to ask them. They look great but I have been told by an Umpire that he contacted the ESMBA
for the same leaflets but he did not even receive the courtesy of a reply, so the best of luck!
