6 Everyone knew that the penultimate session would prove vital and Halvergate knew they
were close to their first ever Norwich Cup triumph as they won on both mats. Margaret
McPherson, Ted Redwood & John Jarvis came so close to keeping the match level before
going down by just one shot against Robbie Lamb’s triple but a 9-4 win for Simon Warnes’ triple
against John Jarvis brought the end in sight for Marriott’s cup dreams.
In the last session Marriott needed to win both games and outscore Halvergate by 21 shots,
realistically this was never going to be on the cards. Keith Cooke’s pair won 11-2 and David Lamb’s
pair won 9-5 to give Halvergate a 14-2 win on the night and a 20-12 aggregate points win to lift
the cup. The Presentation Ceremony was conducted by Norfolk Chairman & Norwich Cup organ-
iser Selwyn Goldsmith who congratulated both teams on reaching the final of Norfolk’s biggest
cup competition
Mann beats Lamb in cracking final
Mann beats Lamb in cracking final
Chris Mann of East Tuddenham is the new Bure Singles Champion
after beating Halvergate’s David Lamb in an excellent final at Kirby
Bedon that went down to the very last wood. Chris Mann started the
game well drawing in his woods on the opening end and putting
David Lamb under intense pressure. With his last wood though
Lamb finally found his weight and drew in to take shot.
Mann continued to impress on the second end taking two shots
and a 2-1 lead. Lamb came close to taking shot with his final wood
on the third end but it fell away from the jack leaving Mann with a 3-
1 lead. The fourth end followed the same pattern with Mann holding
two shots before another superb last wood by Lamb took shot. Chris
Mann continued to outdraw Lamb on the fifth end but once again
Lamb produced a good last bowl to cut the damage to just one shot.
On the sixth end Mann drew in three good woods before an
accurate attacking bowl by Lamb took shot cutting the deficit to just one shot. A cagey seventh
end finished with David Lamb levelling the game at 4-4. Lamb was short with his opening bowl on
the next end and Mann took advantage drawing around it and on to the jack. Lamb managed to
open up the end but Mann drew in a perfect wood just behind the jack. David Lamb then conjured
up a superb backhand to take shot and a firing shot by Mann failed to change anything and Lamb
took the lead for the first time in this low scoring final by 5-4.
A forcing bowl by Mann earned him a shot on the penultimate end to level the game at 5-5.
Mann was disappointed to drop about eighteen inches short of the jack with his opening bowl
while Lamb drew around it onto the jack. Mann resorted to weight with his second bowl but missed
while Lamb drew in a back wood. Mann again failed to retrieve the situation with his third bowl
while Lamb drew yet another back wood in.
A tremendous last wood by Mann took shot leaving Lamb with one wood left to play. Lamb
went for the jack and got it but used too much weight cutting the jack off the side of the mat forcing
a replay of the end. A tight replayed end saw Lamb holding shot just off the jack with Mann’s wood
two inches behind when Chris Mann stepped up to play his last bowl. A perfectly paced shot left
Mann holding shot with just David Lamb’s last bowl to be played. Lamb attacked on his backhand
and was so close to success as it brushed Mann’s bowl but left it in place and Chris Mann was the
new Bure Singles champion. In an all East Tuddenham semi-final Chris Mann beat John Turner
11-4 and got revenge for his defeat in last season’s final. In the other semi-final David Lamb beat
East Tuddenham’s Melvin Woods 9-7.

Halvergate’s Morgan Warnes & Keith Cooke lifted the Bure Pairs title at Hevingham after a hard
fought final against Thorpe Marriott’s Jenny Walker & Richard Perkins. After the Thorpe Marriott
pair took a single on the opening end the Halvergate pairing immediately replied with four shots
on the second end to establish an early lead.
