East Asian Studies Online Research Guide
East Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program committed to offering its students engaging,
interactive, and challenging courses that develop an understanding of East Asian cultures and
proficiency in East Asian languages. An online subject guide was created to assist students with their research
needs in East Asian Studies. The list of resources included books, journals, databases, websites, as well as any
other resources to assist students with their research
(http://subjectguides.uwaterloo.ca/eastasiastudies?hs=a).
East Asian Special Collection Project
The East Asian Special Collection (EASC) project began in 2013 with the aim of digitizing and
modernizing the circulation system used for the Lusi Wong Library’s East Asian language titles
(primarily Chinese, Japanese, and Korean). Previously, circulation was completed manually with paper
slips, and loans were tracked by hand. Automation was completed in 2016 with the capability to input
and process our new items into the Readerware digital library database. Records in the database have
been updated. There are a total of 1,632 titles (which is an increase from 1,151 in 2016), including
1236 Chinese, 348 Japanese, and 48 Korean ones. The collection is fully searchable online at the the
East Asian Special collection website (http://reneascca.ca/#/home).
Library Inventory Project
In 2016, the Library conducted an inventory stack maintenance of all library materials, identifying lost
materials, and areas in need of shifting and weeding. An inventory report was generated, and 369
items were deselected or replaced. The Library currently holds 8417 items in its collection.
VoiceThread Project
The Library collaborated with Waterloo’s Centre for
Teaching Excellence and Dr. Daniel Bratton to pilot
the VoiceThread App for ENGL 140R classes,
resulting in a number of video presentations
regarding the legacy of the Renison University
College
http://rspace.uwaterloo.ca/xmlui/handle/20.500.11895/307). Students are to write a descriptive
narrative about the “journey” that research for VoiceThread involved. For the actual VoiceThread
component, the focus is on describing various physical features and/or artifacts relating to Renison
University College. Students do this by means of any form of media such as a video or PowerPoint
