                                Timothy P. Ryan

                                                 Past AJA President, colleague, and friend, Timothy P. Ryan,
                                                 CCT, CJM, passed away on September 26, 2021 at the age of 73.
                                                   Tim served as President of the American Jail Association from
                                                 2002-2003. A staunch supporter of the corrections profession, he
                                                 was one of the first Certified Jail Managers in the country and a
                                                 Lifetime Member of AJA.
                                                   Before his retirement, Tim was the Director of the Miami-Dade
                                                 Corrections and Rehabilitation Department in Florida, where
                                                 he shared his vision of a modern, state-of-the art corrections
                                                 department with staff and mentored many of the command staff
                                                 members, even encouraging most, if not all, to pursue continuing
                                                 education in the field to include Jail Manager certifications.
                                                             Miami-Dade Director Daniel Junior remembers Tim
                                                            as “a trailblazer in the corrections industry always
                                                             pushing the Department and his leadership team to
                                                             strive to be the best. He was a consummate profes-
                                                              sional, pursuing excellence in the field of correc-
                                                               tions and encouraging us to find innovative ways
                                                                to improve our operations. He was a great mentor
                                                                 and leader. I learned so much from him.”
                                                                    Assistant Director Marydell Guevara says,
                                                                  “First and foremost Tim was my dear friend.
                                                                He was kind, funny and quirky and I enjoyed
                                                                 spending time with him after his retirement. As
                                                                  a Director, he was always on the go and kept all
                                                                   around him on their toes. He made us all bet-
                                                                     ter. Even as he neared retirement, he collabo-
                                                                     rated with outside agencies, participated in
                                                                    industry conferences, and sought innovation
                                                                   to improve MDCR. He was a great Director
                                                                  and a greater man. I know that I and those who
                                                                 knew him will miss him so much.”
                                                                  His AJA family will truly miss him.
                                                                Director Ryan was a beloved husband, father and
                                                             grandfather and is survived by his wife, Sue, his two
                                                           sons, and his grandchildren.
                                                            Thank you, Tim, for your dedication to public service
                                                         and the field of corrections.
