UP AND AWARE - 8

                 Discuss:

                      1. What are some of the ways in which you can fulfil your duty, as an
                           Indian citizen, in your neighbourhood?

                      2. How can you fulfil your duty, as an Indian citizen, in your school?

                      3. Can you think of other things that all Indian citizens should do as
                           their duty?

                      4. Why is it important to be a good citizen?

‘Patriotism’ means a strong sense of loyalty towards one’s country.

A nation is defined by three things:

                • its outline in a map

                • its language

                • its culture

In 1947, India was declared an independent country and it brought together many
languages, diverse arts, music, cuisine, literature, customs and traditions.

India’s struggle for independence has inspired many other countries fighting for their

freedom for one unique principle that was demonstrated to her people by Mahatma
                Gandhi—ahimsa or non-violence.

                     EXCERPTS

‘India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother
of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grandmother of tradition. Our
most valuable and most artistic materials in the history of man are treasured up in

                   India only!’
