Exercise and Discuss:
Conventionally, certain jobs have been performed by one gender alone. Men worked as
policemen, soldiers, repairmen or fishermen and women’s jobs were limited to those of a
housewife, teacher, receptionist or nurse, among other professions.
In the modern world, men and women have entered each others’ job arenas. We no longer
say ‘airhostess’ but rather use the term ‘flight attendant’ and we now call a ‘housewife’ a
‘homemaker’, so that we may fairly include both genders in the same job roles.
Given below are some words. Can you change them so that they sound more gender-neutral?
