Discuss:

Jadav Payeng is a living example of how even one person can care for and
improve the environment. Do you think that if people wanted they could

care for the environment with or without the help of others?

Before a person can care for the environment, he/she needs to know about
the activities that are beneficial or harmful for the environment.

Payeng took up one task—to plant trees. His action led to a greener
sandbank and a new ecosystem for trees, birds, insects, animals and
of course, humans. He also protected the forest from people who wanted to
cut down trees for wood.

Payeng saw for himself the effects of ‘not’ caring for the environment—
hundreds of snakes died. When we care for the environment, we help create
a healthy world for ourselves and other living creatures.

When we destroy our environment, by polluting rivers and oceans or by
cutting down trees, we directly or indirectly destroy living things.

Think about:

Can you think of any one thing that you can do for the environment in a small or big way?
It could be something that you do at home, in the classroom, on a vacation, in a park or on
the road. Write it in the space given below.
