Boy Athletes Smash 12 records -----------------
This year’s athletic carnival was held on the 2nd August.
In the boys'
section, 12 records were either equalled or broken.
R. Ricketts, in the open broad jump, proved again his
superiority, and
smashed the old record with a leap of 20 feet. N. Gallagher
downed the
favourites to win the mile by a comfortable margin. S.
McDonald set a new
record of 17 secs, for the hurdles, while A. Travers won the 100 yds., 220 yds.,
and 440 yds. events. R. Sands won the 880 yds., and gained places in five
other events, while R. Grant gained first place in the high jump.

not have been possible without the efforts of a hard-working staff. (There is no

has been offered a position with a T.V. channel.)
equalled another. A new face this year, R. Casey, gave some higher-rated
athletes the proverbial “run for their money” in both open and under 16 years
divisions. R. Deighton equalled the best high jump ever with a jump of 5 ft.
31 ins. Under 15 competitors this year were fairly evenly matched. H. Williams
broke the existing broad jump record with 17 ft. 5 ins. R. Sperling equalled
the high jump record of 5ft. Ilins., and F. Feige won the 100 yds. and was
placed in the broad jump and 220 yds.
Two records were broken by B. Nichols in the under 14 years group. They
were 100 yds., and broad jump. C. Boone also equalled the high-jump record.
Champions of the day were: Under 14, C. Boone; under 15, F. Feige; under
16, L. Weston; open, A. Travers.

Girls’ Athletic Records topple—
. The championship events
were keenly contested, some of the placegetters being
extremely close together.
At last the long-awaited 2nd August arrived.
On this day the students of Wynnum High were
to show their sporting ability (or lack of it) in
the Inter-House Athletics Carnival. It proved, how
ever, to be a very promising start to the girls’
Athletic Season. During the day eight records were broken. In the qualifying events
Oxley dominated the other houses
The final point score gave Kennedy the coveted cup. Oxley was second while
Mitchell and Cunningham came third and fourth respectively. Championships
went to: Under 14, E. Gibbs (Kennedy); under 15, H. van der Giessen
(Kennedy); under 16, B. Turnbull (Oxley); Open, H. Sands (Cunningham). We
