CUNNINGHAM
HOUSE MISTRESS and MASTER : Miss Coghlan. Mr. O'Brien.
HOUSE CAPTAINS: Dianne Lake, Roscoe Foreman.
HOUSE VICE-CAPTAINS: Julie Gibson, Chris Hubbert.
ONE-STAR CAPTAINS: Margaret Sands. John Robinson.
This year Cunningham performed as most expected it to do. gaining fourth
place in the Swimming Carnival and first place (again) in the Athletics Carnival.
Where Cunningham may have failed in actual competition, our barrackcrs
certainly made up for it with their cheers, helped along by our new arrival,
“Clarence”.
At the Swimming Carnival early in the year, our performance did not do
much to enhance the good name of Cunningham, but it was certainly not through
lack of trying. Our best swimmers amongst the girls would undoubtedly have
been Anne Aplin, Jenny Scarborough and Faye Maag, and from the boys,
David Bromet, John Robinson and Geoffrey Cole.
Cunningham began the Athletics Carnival with an impressive list of wins
and went on to victory for the fifth consecutive year. The introduction of field
events for girls clearly indicated that Cunningham has the best all-round athletes,
as has been the case amongst our boys. Our most outstanding athletes were
Karen Dean (Under 15 Champion), Julie Gibson, and Dianne Lake (Open
Champion). Special mention must be given to our Junior ball games team.
which won each of the three ball games events. This team, trained by Mrs. Albion.
later competed in the G.P.S. Carnival and managed to gain places in all events
once again.
In the boys’ events, Chris Hubbert again showed what hard training can do
by winning most of his events with ease. We look forward to yet another victory
from him in the Cross Country Race. Malcolm Morphew and Neville James
also performed well to help Cunningham to an overwhelming victory over our
nearest rival, Kennedy.
We would like to thank all Cunninghamites for their keen support, and
especially our Vice-Captains. Julie and Chris, and our one-star helpers. Margaret
Sands and John Robinson. To our House Master and Mistress. Mr. O'Brien
and Miss Coghlan, and to Miss Coghlan's assistant. Miss Tighe, we give our
sincere thanks for their active support and guidance.
Although Cunningham won the Athletic Carnival with a lead of over
100 points, Oxley’s win at the Swimming Carnival has brought our points
almost level; so to all Cunningham boys, keep training for the Cross Country,
and all others, study hard — we may need it!
