We must mention a few people whom we consider “our stars”. Boys include
Ean Roff, who keenly contested the Boys’ Open Events and became Open
Runner-up. Brian Weis. Chris Gillis, Peter Lamond (Under 14 Champion) and
        David Lamond.
Denise Scarborough, who won the Girls' Open Division, overcame sickness
to compete in this carnival, and we thank her and Margret Eastley. who swam
very well in all their events.
Unfortunately, a form of disaster struck Oxley early in Second Term, when
House Mistress. Mrs. Roberts, terminated a long relationship with Wynnum High.
Her vacating the position of House Mistress left a large gap which had to be
filled. Oxley had lost a capable and enthusiastic House Mistress. The person
who stepped in and filled this vacated position. Mrs. Gray, also proved herself
to be a worthy replacement to Mrs. Roberts. Mrs. Gray came to the rescue
to encourage and help organise Oxley for the forthcoming Athletics Carnival.
We entered this carnival with slight optimism, but with high hopes of
improving our position of past years. As the day’s events passed. Oxley was
“holding its own” with other Houses. But it was not until the final result was
read out that we could state any definite positions. Oxley had come third!
This was an improvement on last year's performance, and the knowledge of
good sportsmanship in al) events compensated for not winning.
Oxley had its champions in the carnival, but all competitors tried their
utmost to further Oxley's position. Outstanding Boy competitors were F. Holpen
        (Under 13 Champion). D. Barron (Under 15 Champion), P. Lamond. R. Webster.
        G. Lawrence.
In the Girls' events, outstanding athletes were L. Guy and C. Huckfeldt.
But again the news came that we were to lose another capable House
Mistress. Mrs. Gray. Mrs. Gray, too. will be sadly missed, and her encourage
ment in the Athletics Carnival helped Oxley gain third place. We had now lost
two women who had enthusiasm for sports and who had encouraged Oxley to
bigger and better things in the Swimming and Athletics Carnivals. Our new
House Mistress is Miss Pateman. and we are all sure her capabilities in organisa
tion and encouragement will be proved.
The House Master. Mr. Hamilton, capably organised the Oxley Boys and
urged them to second place in the Athletics Carnival. His strong encouragement
        of sportsmanship will be remembered.
We are new hoping for good results in the Cross Country and are sure
of a good showing because of the standard of sporting abilities in the Athletics
        Carnival.
Students who represented Oxley as outstanding participants in inter-school
teams were : Pam Valentine (softball and hockey); Wilhelmina Kooyman (soft-
ball and hockey); Denise Scarborough (hockey); and Lyndall Guy (hockey).
Boys were : Ean Roff. Brian Watson (League); Richard Webster (Soccer).
We thank our House Mistresses and Master, House Captains, Vice-Captains
and One Star Captains for their effort, enthusiasm and encouragement in helping
Oxley further its sporting and academic abilities.
