RUGBY LEAGUE
A GRADE(Courage and Intestinal Fortitude)
Results for the fixture season — one win. two draws and four losses.
This placed the team in sixth position out of the eight teams in the zone.
Two games were washed out by rain and these were recorded as draws.
Unfortunately for the team, these games were against schools that finished
seventh and eighth in the competition. Thus, in all, the season was not without
success.
Lack of experience and lack of heavy players were the features that were
to tell most against Wynnum. A most pleasing aspect was the tremendous
show of courage and sheer guts given by the boys in the face of some very
strong opposition.
An analysis of the team shows that only two players represented the A's
in 1968. and another six boys had played for the 9st. 71b. team in the same
year. The balance of the squad was comprised of new recruits who came to
us from other schools or from Soccer, or who were completely new to the game.
The boys provided some fine displays of determination and their captain
Ian Yeo deserves special mention for his untiring efforts. The team received
excellent coaching from Mr. Niebling. who moulded an inexperienced bunch
into a fine team capable of excellent attacking play.
The team: Ian Yeo (Captain), Jeff Bailment. H. Musch. S. Fuchs.
B. Watson. S. Baranowsky. L. Neumann. G. Bolitho. E. Baumanis. E. Roff.
G. Cain. T. Tickle M. Turner. A. Smith. G. Shapcott and G. Gout.
9st. 71b. TEAM
(Perhaps Next Year)
The 9st. 71b. team went through the season nearly undefeated, being
defeated by only a few teams. With a bit of luck we could have been in the
finals. When the season finished, we had just started to play well. After
Mr. Pearson gave up hope. Mr. Moran started coaching us.
The team through the year was : Bruce Andrews. Glen Cohen. Ian Ogbourne.
Glynn Jones. Ian Cameron. Paul Band. Juris Ozolins. Gary Waterson. Greg
Andrews. Mick Nalder. Danny Walsh. Lance Magnussen. Peter Meager.
Geof Tickle. Wayne Tickle. John Prickett. Greg Cain and John Robson.
With a bit of luck perhaps we will win it next year.
INTER-HOUSE
(Keen Competition)
This year the boys who were not selected to play in the inter-school teams
enjoyed many matches amongst themselves.
After playing a couple of times on the Council oval and once on the
field of Lota State School, we moved for the rest of the season to Kitchener Park.
where conditions were much more favourable.
Because of the large variation in weight amongst the players, the matches
played were not “inter-house”, but the spirit of competition was keen, and
many boys had the opportunity to captain teams.
Sport such as this has a valuable place in school activities, and it is hoped
that our little “series” will be even more enjoyable next year.
