GIRLS' SWIMMING
Keeps W.H.S. to the Fore
On Wednesday, 7th March, 1962, the Annual Inter-house Girls' Swimming
Carnival was held at the Manly Baths. Competition was keen, and at the end
of a thrilling series of events, Kennedy came out on top with 263 points.
The individual champions were:—
OPEN— Carol Bryning (Oxley House).
UNDER 16— Suzanne Hunting and Barbara McQuillan (Oxley and Kennedy).
UNDER 15— Wendy Abbott (Kennedy)
UNDER 14— Ann Acworth (Kennedy).
As is the custom, the girls competed in the Q.S.S.S.S.A. Swimming Carnival
at the Valley Baths. Although no ooints were scored, it was obvious that the
swimming standard had improved almost unbelievably. Instead of the usual fourths
and fifths, the places were seconds and thirds, and no Wynnum swimmer was left
"high and dry". Among the outstanding competitors were Wendy Abbott,
Suzanne Hunting and Ann Acworth.
Our girls also took part in the G.P.S. Swimming Carnival, in which a total
of twelve schools participated. This year the Carnival made history when, for
the first time, heats were conducted on Friday, 16th March. Although we were
not successful in the finals on the following day, Wendy Abbott, Barbara McQuillan
and Ann Acworth kept the name of Wynnum to the fore with their excellent
swimming.
The vast improvement in the swimming may be attributed to the replace
ment of salt water with fresh in the local baths, but this was only a minor aid.
Without the assistance of Mr. Hill, licensee of the baths, we would not have
attained such success. He devoted many hours to our swimming, and for that
we would like to extend to him our sincerest thanks.
BOYS' TENNIS
A plan for the future
Two teams took part in Brisbane inter-school fixtures during the winter
season, but, unfortunately, without any great success.
The A team (G. Blakey (Captain), G. Randall, L. Randall, T. Grant and
G. Bell) lost a series of closely contested matches and, although losing con
sistently, were by no means disgraced.
