In the under 16 events, the outstanding athlete was Feige of Cunningham
House. Feige won the 880 yards in the record time of 2 minutes 15.6 seconds.
Don Fairweather of Kennedy House won the broad jump, while J. Mackay equalled
the high jump record of 5' 31".
The outstanding performance in the under 15 events was put up by
M. Marshall of Cunningham House. Marshall won the broad jump, 880 yards
and 220 yards. Marshall set a new record of 2 minutes 24.9 seconds in the
880 yards. Willis of Kennedy House won the 100 yards sprint in 11.3 seconds,
.3 seconds behind the record.
G. Hembrook and R. Beaumont, both of Kennedy House, were the most
outstanding athletes in the under 14 events. This year there were not as many
under 14 boys, but, considering that their numbers had fallen, they still put up
some very fine performances. In the 100 yards sprint R. Beaumont tied with
G. Bowler, both breaking the previous record.
In the boys' relays all previous records were broken. Cunningham won the
relays with a total of 32 points, closely followed by Oxley with 30 points.
This year five new events were added, these being the open, under 16,
under 1 5 discus, the under 16 880 yards, and the open 4x110 yards relay.
Congratulations to all individual champions and to the winning house,
Kennedy.
Our sincere thanks go to Mr. Mayfield, Mr. Doube, the groundsmen, and
everyone who played an active part in the successful running of this year's
3-WAY ATHLETICS MEETING
Inter-house Sports Carnival.
For both spectators and athletes this year's three-way meet was an exciting
forerunner to the Q.S.S.S.S.A. Carnival. Held at Camp Hill, it proved to be a
close competition between the athletes of Wynnum, Balmoral and Camp Hill —
only fourteen points separating the three schools.
Our first win of the day came when Etchell won the under 16 220. Shortly
after Mackay cleared 5' 3" to win the under 16 high jump. In the thrilling
under 16 880 race, Feige burst the tape ahead of his rivals to give him his second
win of the day, as he also won the under 16 100. The discus event, entered this
year for the first time, gave us two more wins when Marshall (under 15) and
Fairweather (under 16) both threw over 100'. The under 16's finished their
day of wins suitably, when they combined to win the 4x110 relay.
