CRICKET
A GRADE
"Premiership honours in the offing"
Our A grade team was second top team in its zone at the end of the first
half of the comoetition, with one outright victory to its credit. Best performances
with the bat were by I. Grant, R. Ricketts, M. Schmidt, J. Maccoll, R. Hovey
and W. Hamlet. With the ball. Grant, Maccoll, Ricketts, Hamlet and Hovey —
all have good figures — in other words, a team of all-rounders! I. Grant earned
the distinction of selection in a representative State Secondary school team against
the Metropolitan schools. We were very glad to have the use of a good turf
wicket at Tingalpa as our home wicket this year, especially as this was the scene
of our outright victory over Balmoral.
C GRADE
The C team, though not likely premiership winners, enjoy their cricket as
much as anybody, and have already produced a couple of potential A graders in
R. Williams, K. Brown and F Whatley among the batsmen. Murray and Whatley
have been consistent performers with the ball.
UNDER 15 A
This team is keeping up the Wynnum tradition of supremacy in this division.
We have been premiership winners in our zone of the under 15 A grade com
petition for the last two years, and at the end of the first half-year our team was
once again leading the points table. Best performances to date have been by
Noel Sims, Sewell, Seymour ano Dunkley with the bat, and with the ball, I. Carr
had an outstanding oerformance of six wickets for six runs in seven overs.
Hansen was the next most consistent wicket-getter.
UNDER 15 B
There is enough promising material in this team to keep the A team on
their toes to retain their place. While the team has not been very successful in
its matches, fine individual performances were turned in by R. Sullavan (46 not
out! and P. Long, Lockyer and Dolby with the bat, and Sullavan, Long, Turpin
and Deighton with the ball.
Towards the end of the year we were fortunate to have a visit from the
famous West Indian pace bowler, Wesley Hall. After giving us an interesting talk
on his home country, he showed a few of the cricketers some of the finer points
in playing the game, referring to batting, bowling, and especially fielding.
It is hoped that our younger team members have gained great benefit from
the visit of this international sporting personality.
The Under 15 A team justified expectations and took off the South Zone
Premiership in the last match by defeating Salisbury on the first innings.
Team members were : Noel Sims (Capt.l, Neil Sims, Ian Carr, Des Dunkley,
Geoff McLeary, Bob Keable, David Sewell, Ron Dolby, Geoff Lockyer, Bob Sullavan;
Peter Hansen, Bob Patterson, Earl Seymour.
