GIRLS' ATHLETICS, 1962

                                         A firm resolve to excel

The standard of the Girls' Athletics has improved a great deal this year and,
as a result, the girls are taking a keener interest in the various sports meetings.
This renewed interest is particularly apparent in the Junior section, where we
          now have many premising athletes.
The athletic team acquitted themselves very well at the G.P.S. Carnival.
We gained more places than we had previously and the morale of the team was
lifted by our success. The girls came home with a firm resolve to excel them
selves at the State Secondary Carnival and they have been practising ball games
harder than ever, while the runners have been constantly in training.
As usual, the Inter-house Sports were very keenly competed, with all the
girls showing their house spirit by participating in the qualifying races. Kennedy
House came from behind to win the cup when its ball games teams proved so
successful. Oxley House came second, with Cunningham and Mitchell filling
third and fourth places respectively. The champions were:—

                        UNDER 14— Karen Jordana (Oxley).
                        UNDER 15— Elizabeth Gibbs (Kennedy)
                        UNDER 16— Barbara McQuillan (Kennedy)
                        OPEN— Jeanette Sands (Cunningham).
Our congratulations go to these girls, who put up such fine performances.
At the annual Three-Way meet, Wynnum again won from Balmoral and
Camp Hill. The Under 15 ball games teams did extremely well, while the
sprinters again proved how valuable they were with numerous wins in all fields.
This year for the first time a discus throw was introduced, but unfortunately the
other two schools did not provide any competition in the Under 15 section and
our competitor won the Open event untroubled.
Our most important carnival, the Q.S.S.S.S.A., is yet to come, and we hope
that we can make it a fitting close to a very good year.
The girls would like to thank Miss Nixon and Miss Deaville for all the time
and help they have given us, and we hope that the results will be worthy of their
          effort.
