8 Stone Team shows promise
Coach—Mr. B. A. Lee.
Travelling Manager—Mr. L. T. O’Mara.
Captain—B. Martin.
Vice-Captain—B. Harpur.
The eight stone Rugby League team had a successful season and only lost two matches and drew
one. The victorious team in the competition was Balmoral by whom we were beaten.
The outstanding players in the backs were Eric Morgan and John
Anderson and in the forwards, Glen Fuchs and Brian Martin.
E. Morgan, J. Anderson, B. Martin were each awarded a half-pocket
for outstading play during the season.
The team thanks Mr. B. A. Lee for devoting his time to coaching them.
Seven Stoners and Intermediate grades also
give good account of themselves --------------------
The team finished the year “full of running”, their only complaint
being that the season was too short.
Captain was half-back Trevor Ingham whose leadership and demo
cratic response to suggestions from vice-captain Douglas Byrne lead to a
spirit of co-operation throughout the whole team except, perhaps, in the
case of Griffin whose hard-earned reputation was not won by attention to
the “niceties” of fair play. Len Moffat and Geoff. Vayro began the season
as centres and finished as two of the most reliable forwards. Graham Gash,
Ron Collins, John Wylie and Wayne Goostrey combined well as a forward
pack that gave no quarter but revelled in the toughest going. The most spec
tacular tries were scored by John Jocumsen. His pace and penetrative ability
put the finishing touch to many an opening provided by five-eighth Geoff.
Graham. Always a solid defender and frequently an enterprising runner. Bill
Sturgess, was the “custodian” for the team. Our elusive wingers, Hugh
Davis, Dan Etchell and John Smith showed pace and initiative by scoring from
seemingly impossible situations. Noel Cumner’s crushing tackles and hard
running were mainly responsible for the low number of points scored
against us for the season—only seventeen points as compared with sixty-
three in our favour. The team was “runner-up” in the east zone and was
a metropolitan semi-finalist. Three half-pockets were awarded to members
of our team—Hugh Davis, Robert Griffin and Len Moffat.
Our congratulations are extended to the nine stone team and to our
other premiership winners, the “C” grade and six stone.
Intermediate Rugby League
This year only one team, the six stone, took part in Primary School
competition, winning its way undefeated to the Metropolitan semi-finals. A
squad of 23 boys trained assiduously throughout the season and competition
for team places was keen.
