Girls’ Tennis also
Girls’ tennis in this School has not been of a very high standard in
recent years, that is, not in comparison with other schools. This year has
not been an exception.
However, both A Grade and B Grade teams were able to win a
number of matches, being more successful in Q.S.S.S.S.A. than in G.P.S.
fixtures. Diane Hargreaves, Marlene Hargreaves, Geraldine Thompson and
Vicki Cutlack were our worthy Q.S.S.S.S.A. A Grade representatives, while
the B Grade team had more variety in Beverly Gunderson, Judith Pleace.
Desley Tomkins, Jane Curry, Sharon Gordon and Phyllis Hargreaves. Teryl
Bushing was a reliable stand-in and there were many other girls who
willingly played G.P.S. matches on account of the inability of some of our
girls to play Saturday afternoon matches for the School. We appreciate the
sportsmanship of such girls, too numerous to list here.
Our visits to other High Schools and Colleges in Brisbane and at
Southport were very enjoyable. We found most of the girls very friendly
and above all, good sports. One visit worthy of particular mention is the
visit to Brisbane State High School. Every girl who went to State High
will agree that we had a time of real fellowship and fair play, and returned
to Wynnum the richer for our visit, with some wonderful new friends.
An Inter-House Tennis Championship was conducted this year and
was won by Kennedy House who were undefeated.
All girls who have enjoyed a good game of tennis, not only in inter
school matches but also within the school in the Wednesday afternoon sport
ing periods, appreciate the work done by some of our teachers in the organiza
tion involved. Special thanks go to Miss Lenihan in particular, but also
to Mrs. Taege and to Mrs. Lacey.
Hockey comes to W H S to stay—
Hockey is now firmly established as a winter sport for boys with
about fifty players participating each Wednesday afternoon. After a few
sessions learning basic skills and regulations, our players were ready to play
inter-house matches and matches against other schools when this could be
arranged.
Mitchelton High School wished to have an early match before their
fixtures started, and we fielded two teams against them. Our teams held
their own in the first half, but the Mitchelton teams proved too strong. The
A team lost 3-nil and the B team lost 6-1.
Salisbury visited Wynnum with some sporting teams, including one
hockey team. We fared better this time, winning 3-1. Warren Schweitzer,
David Ament, and Colin Ament scored for Wynnum.
