year, was the first recipient of the new S. Garrett prize for sportsmanship.
At the end of the early 196O season the A Grade team were in third
place in their zone, and so will participate in the inter-zone play-off under
the new scheme. Ian Hastings hit up a nice 44 against Banyo, and later
selected with T. Niebling in the combined Secondary Schools team, top-scored
from the opening position with 64 against G.P.S. Most consistent performer
     has been Colin Ament (28, 25 n.o. and 32 n.o.), Niebling (5 for 22) and Daly
(4 for 14) dismissed Kedron unchanged.
Of the others, the Under-15 show the most promise, which is as it
should be, with three wins out of three (E. Morgan 53 and 48, Maccoll 3
for 4). This team is largely responsible for Wynnum being in third position
out of 13 competing schools in the championship points table for all grades.
B Grade have drawn one and lost two, Gallagher (80 n.o.) and Austin (54) —
     glorious in defeat.
The C team have provided a striking “double” by N. Roach and
     H. Williams, each of whom obtained 6 for 23 in two separate matches.
     J. Jocumsen topped the batting with 56 runs.

     Boy Swimmers need more water

From the beginning of this year, the High and Intermediate Schools
were combined for all sporting activities. The effects of this were felt
immediately in the first major sport of the year—Swimming.
The already overtaxed local pool was found inadequate for the large
numbers of pupils who wished to take part in this sport. To relieve the
situation boys and girls went on alternate days. Even so, the numbers in
the various Houses were so large that two Houses only could attend at
the one time. The pool was still crowded. From such conditions, it is
obvious that the children cannot derive the full benefits from their visits
to the baths, and furthermore, one visit per fortnight is not enough.
The position will not improve, it will deteriorate. The population of
our district is growing rapidly. The local schools are increasing their enrol
ments each year. We have one swimming pool, a small one. W.H.I.S. pupils.
parents, and residents must realise that, in the interests of the youth of
this suburb, another pool—of full Olympic dimensions is urgently needed I
Well, Mr. Gunn, Mr. Newton, Mr. Clayton, Apex, Rotary, Lions, school
     associations, what about it ?
Visits were made to Langlands Park; but, though these are valuable
for training, they are too expensive and take too much time.
This year we held our carnival at the Valley Baths on 21st March.
For the second year, Oxley proved the superior house. Their win
was convincing. Oxley swimmers were able to amass 392 points from cham
pionship (314) and qualifying (78) events. Runner-up was Cunningham
(226 points). Oxley House is to be congratulated on its win and on its house
spirit. Oxley House dominated proceedings and showed that she had the
champion boys in all divisions as—Trevor Neibling (open). Jim Thallon
     (under 16), D. Byrne (under 15) and P. Castleton (under 14).
Results worthy of special mention are: Trevor Neibling (O), Alec
     Smith (C). Jim Thallon (O), Robin Ricketts (C), P. Bell (O), L. Acworth
