Generic name is a singular noun and begins with a capital letter. All
names up to this rank are single word (i.e., Uninomial or Unitary) and are
written in italics in print: Example: Lilium, Digitalis.
Naming of Species: The name of species consists of two words:
◦ First name is the generic name.
◦ Second name is the specific epithet. The second name is never used alone.
◦ The surname of the person, who first named the plant (Author), has to be placed
after the specific epithet.
The (Old) Classification of Organisms: two kingdoms:
Kingdom Kingdom Plantae
Animalia
(two major Subkingdoms).
1) Subkingdom Thallophyta:
▪ Plants, undifferentiated into roots, stems and leaves.
▪ Bacteria, Algae, Fungi and Lichens.
2) Subkingdom Embryophyta:
▪ Embryonic plants, i.e., Gametes, the zygotes develop into embryo.
▪ Bryophyta, Pteridophyta and Spermatophyta.
