Medicinal plants (PG 101) Level 1 Clinical Pharmacy-PharmD

Classification of Fungi: Fungi are classified into 4 divisions:

                                             1) Zygomycota = Bread-molds

                                             2) Ascomycota = Cup or sac-molds
                                             3) Basidiomycota = Club-molds
                                             4) Deuteromycota = Imperfect-molds

All divisions of fungi exhibit sexual and asexual cycles
except deuteromycota, which has no known sexual cycles.

                                          (spores through sporogenesis).

                   Importance of Fungi:

                   A) Ascomycota: 1) Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), Family
cup or sac molds Saccharomycetaceae. Unicellular, Globular, or ovoid,

thin cell wall, a single nucleus. It contains enzymes

“Zymase, Invertase, etc.”, vitamins B-group, 46%

                                               proteins, 36% carbohydrates.

                                           Uses:

                                               ▪ Source of vitamin B-complex.

                                               ▪ Manufacture of nucleic acids and human insulin.

                                               ▪ In baking and in many fermentation processes.

                                           2) Ergot: Dried sclerotium of Claviceps purpurea,

Family clavicipitaceae arising in the ovary of rye,
                                               “Secale cereale, Family Graminae”.
