The fungal hyphae fixes the lichen to the substrate, absorbs mineral salts and
protects the algal cells from desiccation and excessive light intensity.
Lichens reproduce asexually by:
- Fragmentation of parts of the lichen.
- Formation of specialized structures called soredia which contain
parts of both components.
Some important lichens:
Lichens belonging to Family Parmeliaceae,
examples are:
o Iceland moss: “Citraria islandica” It contains the carbohydrates
lichenin and isolichenin (lichen starch). Use: Demulcent and as
nutrient jelly.
o Litmus: Dried extract of Lacunaria tartarea. Use: As acid base
indicator, blue in the alkaline medium and the red in acid medium.
