sequence is familiar. Finally, the mind is representational and a representa-
tion is always an interpretation. Objects, events and situations do not uniquely
determine their own interpretation, so novelty can arise by moving sideways
from one representation to another.
The notions of combination, accumulation and restructuring are good
ideas that should not be thrown out because the theories in which they were
originally embedded do not measure up to the challenge of answering all the
creativity questions. each represents a sliver of truth. The puzzle of creativity is
hard, so we need to make use of every good idea. The concepts and principles
proposed since the end of the 19th century need to be extracted from their
original contexts, reformulated and incorporated into a better theory. to state
such a theory is the task for the next chapter.
