URBAN DEVELOPMENT
Approaches for promoting urban development:
1- Environmental health:
- Maintain safe water, food supply.
- Maintain sanitary sewage and drainage system as well as safe solid
waste.
- Avoid industrial pollution.
2- Health authority functions:
a- Leadership functions:
- Advocacy of measures that protect the health of the public.
- Fostering the community's capacity for actions by encouraging
community self-programs.
- Carry out health impact and risk assessment.
- Conducting epidemiological surveillance.
b- Advisory and participatory functions:
- Training personnel to identify, prevent, control environmental
health hazards.
- Carry out researches into health related environmental problems
3- The Ministry of Health and population's role:
Providing health information for those concerned with the
management of environmental health activities.
Linking environmental data with health status.
Focusing on the occupational health as a specific.
4- Political commitment:
- An improvement in the health condition of the urban poor will
only come about if there is a real political commitment to change.
