2. Maternity Care
Maternity care targeted all females in the child bearing period 15 to
49 years of age in the geographical area of the primary health care center.
Components of maternity care are classified according to the status of
pregnancy and include antenatal care, natal care, and post natal care.
A. Antenatal care
Antenatal care is the care & supervision given to a pregnant
woman so that she may pass through with minimum of mental &
physical discomfort & a maximum of mental & physical fitness.
According to EDHS 2014, 83% of mothers' received regular antenatal
care from a trained provider.
Aims of ante natal care:
1. The main goal is the safety & welfare of the mother & her fetus.
2. Preparation of mother for labor, lactation & subsequent care of her
child.
3. Early detection & appropriate treatment of high risk conditions.
4. Reduction of maternal and infant mortality, still births and
premature.
5. Increase the number of breast fed babies.
Schedule of antenatal visits (12-15 visits in normal cases):
1 trimester and 2 trimester: 1 visit/month

Components of antenatal care:
A. Initial visit
I. History taking:
1. Personal, name, age, and occupation, address.
2. Menstrual: LMP, EDD, menarche, and dysmenorrheal.
3. Obstetric: gravidity, parity, and complications for mother or baby.
4. Medical: past illness, venereal, heart, DM, TB.
5. Family: any genetic disease, hypertension, DM, heart, TB.
6. Social: income family member, education.
7. Complains and history of present condition.
