                “We  need  to talk,” Lucy says.
                    She’s sitting  on  the  couch,  mascara strea ked  down  her  cheek s.
                    Oh,  shi t.
                    I  drop  my  purse  and   rush  over  to  her.  As  soon  as  I  sit  down  nex t  to

                her, she  starts crying .
                    “Wha t’s wrong ? Did Alex  brea k up with  you?”
                    She   starts   sha king    her   hea d   and    then   I   rea lly   start   frea king    out.
                Pleas e  do n’t  say   can cer.  I  grab  her  ha nd,  and   tha t’s  when  I  see  it.  “Lucy!
                You’re  eng aged ?”

                    She   no ds.   “I’m   sorr y.   I   kno w   we   still   ha ve   six   mont hs    lef t   on   the
                lea se,  but he  want s me  to move  in  with  hi m.”
                    I  stare  at  her  for  a  minu te.   Is  that   why   she ’s  cr ying?  Be cau se  she   wan ts
                out  of  he r  leas e?  She  rea ches   for  a  tissue  and   starts  dabbing   at  her  ey es .
                “I  feel   awful,  Lily.  You’re   going  to  be   all  alone.   I’m  moving   and   you
                won’t ha ve  an yone.”
                    Wha t the    . . .

                    “Lucy? Um . . . I’ll be  fine.  I promise. ”
                    She  looks up at me  with  ho pe in  her  ex pres sion.  “Rea lly?”
                    Why   in  the   world  do es  she   hav e  thi s  impression  of  me?  I  no d  again.   “Yes .
                I’m no t mad, I’m ha ppy for you.”
                    She   thro ws   her   arms    around     me   and    hu gs   me.    “Oh,    tha nk    you,
                Lily!”  She  starts  giggling   in  bet ween  bouts  of  tea rs.  When       she  rel ea ses

                me,   she  jumps  up  and   says,  “I  ha ve  to  go  tel l  Alex !  He  was  so  worri ed
                you  wouldn’t  let   me  out  of  my  lea se! ”  She  grabs  her       purse  and   sho es
                and  disappea rs out the  front  door.
                    I  lie  back  on  the  couch  and   stare  up  at  the  cei ling .  Did  she   just  play
                me?
                    I   start   laughi ng,   bec ause   until   thi s   moment ,   I   ha d   no    idea    ho w
                much  I’ve  been  waiting  for thi s to ha ppen.  The  who le plac e to myself!
