What would the child like to say? %u2022 Listening also gives the child TIME. This is ESSENTIAL. Explain that young children need time to decide what to say, to plan their sentences and access the words.%u2022 Young children often need 10 seconds to understand what you have said and then to formulate an answer.%u2022 Show the 10 second rule.(ELB. 10, Slide 27)(Slide 28)%u2022 Show (slide 28) again.%u2022 %u2018Respond%u2019 = what you say and how you respond to the child%u2019s play and interaction. Responses include:o %u2018Explaining%u2019 = giving a running commentary using short, simple sentences which are 2/3 words longer than the sentences the child would use himself.o %u2018Repeating%u2019 = repeating what the child says but using a correctly structured and articulated sentence.o %u2018Expanding%u2019 = repeating what the child says but adding 1or 2 words either at the end of the sentence or within the sentence.%u2022 Explain that these principles have been incorporated in a number of programmes e.g. Hanen.%u2022 Reassure learners that explaining, repeating and expanding will be explored more under the technique of %u2018modelling%u2019 in session 7.
