Speech and Language Support for 3-5sS2%u2022 There is evidence to suggest that modifying adult-child interaction can promote communication between adults and children. However it is essential to be mindful of the diversity that exists across cultures with regards to adult-child interaction styles before embarking on this approach. E.g. in some cultures, the adult may dominate the conversation and contributions and/or information may not be shared equally between conversation partners. Furthermore, the role of the %u2018significant other%u2019 in language development may not be the main carer/mother/father e.g. in certain African cultures, the older sister is considered the main conversation and play partner. %u2022 Cultural norms with regards to adult-child interaction styles are likely to influence the interaction between a parent and child from a non-western culture (but it could also affect the interaction patterns of staff working in pre-school settings or parent helpers).%u2022 Liaison with parents and families is so important.BREAK2.4.0 WORKING WITH FAMILIES(ELB. 16-19, Slide 37)%u2022 Research indicates how important it is to work with families directly on speech and language development.%u2022 However, this isn%u2019t always easy and there can be barriers for different reasons. %u2022 The aim of this section is to share good practice and give each other supportive ideas.
