%u00a9 Elklan Training Limited 2023 31Elklan. Speech and Language Support for 3-5sS22.4.3 Interaction with families(Slide 40) %u2022 We have looked at the interaction between adults and children.%u2022 The same applies to our interaction with families.%u2022 Families know the child well and we have a lot we can learn from them. If we listen to the families first and show an interest in their views and concerns there is a better chance that they will listen to our points and ideas.%u2022 We need to STOP and LISTEN to families.%u2022 Once we have done this and earned their trust, then we might be able to work more effectively together.2.5.0 AL AND WORKING WITH FAMILIES(Slide 41)%u2022 Bilingual families are no more likely to have children with SLCN than monolingual families (Westman et al, 2008).%u2022 But they may need additional support if they are not familiar with the language being used or the context/ learning environment. %u2022 A key point is that practitioners may need additional support in understanding the cultural influences that impact on family communication. They may require additional time to talk to families and to source information to develop their awareness of different cultures.
