b) Kidney disease (nephropathy)
Disease of the small blood vessels of the renal glornenilus may give
rise to diabetic nephropathy.
c) Nerve disease
There are different types of nerve disease which can result in a loss of
sensation in the feet or in some cases the hands, pain in the foot and
problems with the functioning of different parts of the body including
the heart.
d) Disease of the circulatory system
Disease of the circulatory system or cardiovascular disuse, accounts for
majority of all deaths among people with diabetes. The risk of heart
disease in diabetics is 2-4 times higher than those who do not have
diabetes
e) Other complications include
Ketoacidosis
Low blood sugar (Hypoglycemia)
Bacterial/fungal infections
4. Understand the importance of clinical assessment of diabetic
applicants for insurance
4.1 Clinical assessment of diabetic applicants
Ideally all diabetics should be reviewed at regular intervals, at least once a year
the purpose of this review is to check and advice on diabetic control.
The review should include:
a) Monitoring the blood pressure and treating it if necessary
b) Measurement of Serum Lipids
c) Check Renal Function
d) Monitor values of Gly fib or Hbalc.
e) Assessment of underlying Heart Disease using ECG/ Treadmill Test
f) Check for early signs of retinopathies
g) Looks for any other micro vascular or macro vascular complications
