(iv) For certain simple cases, the surveyor is able to
ascertain the cause of loss very easily from the
property itself, or from the surroundings. E.g, for
fires caused by ignition by naked flame or ignition
by hot surfaces.
(v) Similarly, it is not very difficult for a surveyor to
determine spontaneous combustions which occurs
in materials like cotton seeds, oil cakes etc. Bad
storage conditions, existence of humidity and
lack of ventilation result in fermentation and
heat, leading to combustion. Visual inspection
or chemical analysis can help the surveyor to
determine the cause of combustion for doubtful
cases.
(vi) A surveyor determines Explosion damage as
they are evidenced by shattered glasses, broken
or displaced machinery, splintered timbers, and
widely scattered debris.
(vii)The surveyor, with his experience and expertise,
is able to develop several plausible theories by
carefully sifting through evidences and eliminating
other possibilities. If he cannot determine any reason,
