can sometimes reveal the real or most probable
cause of fire. A detailed examination of the salvage
would involve shifting, sorting, counting, weighing,
measuring, chemical and physical tests.
(ii) The thorough examination also enables the surveyor
to observe the patterns of fire travel and fire
spread, rate of fire growth, degree of burning,
etc. In simple cases, the cause of fire is easily
determined as due to defective heating devices,
careless handling of hot/ burning materials or
electrical short circuit. If however, the property
is badly burnt, or severely destroyed, the cause
and origin of fire may not be ascertained easily.
The surveyor then suggests various tests to find
the cause.
(iii) Investigation into the cause of loss requires
common sense, imagination and technical
knowledge of building construction, electrical
installation, materials and various manufacturing
processes. The surveyor may in complicated
cases call for a technical expert with the approval
of the insurers.
