Page 17 - SEO Mad Scientist 2020 Report
P. 17
Now, when you typed in "keyword in 2019" their page comes up number one, but if you search
"keyword in 2020" or just "keyword", our site now shows on page one. If you search for any
variation of the term with "2019 and 2020" neither of our sites will show
There are many conclusions we can draw from this data but the most important is you may
benefit from using the year throughout your content if you are using dates in your titles, or are
ranking in SERPs with others that are. More tests are needed to draw any firm conclusions, so we
will continue to update on this.
Can You Use Duplicate Content with Geolocation Changed and Still Rank?
Test Setup:
We often use tools to generate massive amounts of pages on our website for different locations.
But we have found there can be issues if your geo-locations are too close and you are making
thousands of pages on one website…
But, what if you were to duplicate an entire website and change the location or use content from
other websites all over that rank in different locations? Could you use duplicate content and just
change out the geolocation and still rank?
By duplicating the entire website we could potentially solve cannibalization issues and save time,
as well as leverage the content for targeted interlinking across every location.
We built multiple sites with entirely duplicate content to test this idea in different industries and
areas around the country. The 1st site was 100% duplicate content, either fully syndicated, not
geo-specific and just relevant, or geo-specific taken from another site and changed to our
geolocation, Chicago.
