Notifiable (Exotic) Diseases
FMD
No further cases of FMD have reported in past 6 months within the
containment or free zone.
Required testing to support re-instatement of the free zone in the outbreak
area were not completed in time for submission to OIE. This means that it will
be another 18 months before SA will possibly have free zone fully re-instated.
The impact to pork industry has been limited, and will remain so, due to our
Compartment system. The only product/country with which we still have an
issue is bacon to Botswana.

When SAPPO became aware of the last of the sites (Randfontein), SAPPO
escalated conversations with government to the level of MEC’s and Minister
of Agriculture. During these conversations a commitment was made by MEC’s
to fund culling operations for ASF from their Provincial budgets.
Table indicates that SAPPO’s involvement at 16 different sites. We have
purchased 4033 pigs of which 2308 were culled in Randfontein. Gauteng has
undertaken to refund the 2308.
We are currently aware of ASF in the Secunda and Standerton areas of
Mpumalanga. Various attempts to engage with Director and or MEC in MP
have been fruitless at this time.
