Genetic analysis of the outbreaks indicates that there have been 3 different
strains of the virus involved. The most probable source of these outbreaks is
from the ASF control zone (illegal movements of pigs).

Another DAFF sponsored ASF workshop took place in September and a
steering committee is expected to be formed by end of October to drive
current ASF outbreak control and future protocols.

In the meantime SAPPO will continue to motivate our members to become
compartmentalised.

CSF & PRRS
No new cases have been reported.

Raw Pork Imports from PRRS Positive Countries
No developments or changes since last meeting.

Pork Exports

Outward Selling Mission trip (organised by DTi) is taking place from the 17 to

24 October. Indonesia and Vietnam are on itinerary.

We have been able to organise that Dr Leana Janse van Rensburg
accompanies us to Vietnam to meet with their veterinary authorities.

SAPPO has been included in a Standard Bank initiated trip to China to explore
export opportunities. We have been unsuccessful to date at organising
meetings with Chinese MARA (vet authorities).

Live Pig Imports

The Pig Breeders agreed during their AGM in September to put imports of live
pigs on hold for the meantime.
