That’s Crazy
During the week of January 20, 2006, Mr. Smith asked I would
join him for lunch and a client meeting, and I agreed to with on
February 13, 2006.
Mr. Smith drove him and me to the restaurant on February 13,
2006, in his car. On the ride to the restaurant, he told me “I have to be
honest with you. I find you very attractive. I wished I met you earlier. I
fantasize about you. Even when I’m home with my wife I think about
you. I want to think of a way to make it fair to you. I tried to change
the subject and avoid his conversation.
When we arrived at the restaurant, he told me, “You are amazing.
I want to make love to you. You are all I think about, “I again tried to
change the subject and avoid his conversation. After our meal, Mr. Hall,
the President of the company showed up at the restaurant and the three
of us had a drink. At about 8:00 pm. I told them I had to leave to go
home to my children, and Mr. Smith insisted on driving me back to the
office to get my car even though Mr. Hall stated it was on his way home.
In the ride back to the office, Mr. Smith made similar statements
to me about wanting to make love to me and thinking of a way to make
it fair to me. I interpreted his comments about wanting to make it fair
to me to mean he would promote me to Project Officer.
Once we arrived at the office, he reached over and touched my
leg, tried to kiss me, grabbed my breast, and grabbed my crotch, and
said, “why don’t we go upstairs.” I pulled away and got out of the car
and drove home.
I did not complain to anyone at work because Mr. Smith is one of
the owners of the company and I feared to lose my job. I am a single
mother and support my two children myself. I also did not know what
to do. I hoped it would pass.
In mid-April, Mr. Smith called me and told me, “I am thinking
about you. I want to be with you. I can’t stop thinking about you. You
are so sexy.” I again rejected his advances, changed the subject and
hung up.
In mid-April, I was working on a conference that required me to
stay at the Hyatt Regency hotel for a few days. Mr. Smith called and
told me it would be nice if he could come to see me at the hotel. I said
no, and Mr. Smith’s demeanor towards me at work changed.
In June, Mr. Smith told me he wanted to place me on probation
but did not follow through with it. That so upset me that I confided to
my direct supervisor, Melissa Mills, about Mr. Smith’s sexual
harassment of me and that I feared that I would now lose my job
because I rejected him. Ms. Mills told me she already knew about it,
