That’s Crazy
I understood clearly how it would be false hope; I knew we would not
make it. I did not have the power to prevent the employees from
looking for other jobs and make their own choices about whether they
should stay until we closed. I owed them that much, “The Truth”. I
watched other companies’ string employees along until contracts
ended, knowing they could not keep them employed. I had to allow
them to choose what was best for them and their families.
By the end of January, three people had resigned. Each time an
employee turned in their resignation, my stomach would churn.
Intellectually, I knew they all had to leave, but the resignations made
me feel like I had failed each one of them. I also had taken a home
equity loan of $80,000 from my condo, just to meet the expenses for
the next 3 months. It was probably not the best decision, but I was
just determined to do right by those who had stood by me. I was able
to repay Christine’s $13,000 and make sure we could meet payroll for
the remaining employees who would stay to the end.
Crazy Jerome also appeared again. He just would not go away. He
called and left Tyrone the following message on his voicemail:
“Hey, Tyrone this is Jerome, I won't go to give you the chance to
be a man, I heard you have pretty much bankrupt the company, and
the company is closing and that’s not a surprise. I just wanted to know
why you stabbed me in the back, what possessed you to stab me in the
back. The man who had carried you for five years, and I do mean
carried you or perhaps you forget about IT Solutions, the clothes, the
shoes, the money, all the other things I did for you. I want you to tell
me to my face why you stole my company. I want you to meet me at
