That’s Crazy
black jelly beans anything I could find with a horrible taste, their
ribbon read "Dumped" since that was how Leroy always referred to
our divorce with Courtney, that I dumped him.
I also made name tags and based on the party favor chosen from
the basket, the birthday or divorce bag, determined which side of the
room they would sit on for the party. The birthday side was decorated
with pretty balloons and colorful crepe paper, the divorce side had a
skeleton and was draped in black crepe paper. Christine did a terrific
job in designing both cakes. I was turning 45 and my birthday cake
had my age and was decorated with pink and white icing. The divorce
cake was the highlight of the party. The cake was decorated as though
it was in a graveyard with a tombstone, the headstone on the tomb
read, "Divorced, Goodbye Leroy. September 8." Courtney had also
taken the groom ornament, the same type used to stand with the bride
on a wedding cake, and marked his face with a red marker, making
him look as though he had been beaten up as he laid on top of the
grave.
I made sure the entire group of sister-friends who had attended
my wedding was now attending the divorce party. I told those sisters
I was mad because they should have told me what this marriage thing
was all about; they knew I did not have a clue. The party became the
hit of the night; everyone was coming to our area and taking pictures
of the area and the cake. They had never seen or been to a divorce
party. Neither had I, but I knew it was a celebration for me and a new
beginning. I needed some fun and did I have fun.
