6. Conclusion
From the identify of the development of the Muslim Intel-
lectuals from the perspective of Indonesian history, it can be
concluded that the Muslim intellectuals in Indonesia had
emerged since the sixteenth century when the Islamization took
place and the Muslim state in Indonesia were set up as the indi-
cation of the coming of the new age after the Hindu Buddhism
period ended. The coming of the Muslim thinkers and scholars
in the next periods from the seventeenth century through eigh-
teenth century up to the nineteenth century and the twentieth
century are clearly represented their society in responding their
challenges and problems of their age.
It is also clear that the emergence of the Muslim intellectu-
als in Indonesia coincided with the shift of the political, social,
cultural and religious life from the era of the Muslim states to
the colonial and the nation state period. During the long pe-
riod of the history of the Muslim intellectuals, they have pro-
vided a great contribution to the development of their state
and society.
The duty of the contemporary Muslim intellectuals actu-
ally are very hard and demanding, but their role in the Indone-
sian nation building in the present and the future are very promi-
nent.
