Information Storage and Processing Systems
Chair’s Welcome Message
On behalf of the Information Storage and Processing Systems (ISPS) Executive Committee, it
is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2016 ISPS Conference.
The very first ISPS conference was held 25 years ago in 1991. Through many years of
collective effort, ISPS has established itself as a unique and leading forum on a wide
spectrum of research topics connected to hard disk drives, optical storage systems,
biomedical equipment, etc… The conference has successfully attracted international
researchers from academia and industry who share their findings, network, and foster
collaborative opportunities in technical and business areas. The conference also serves as a
space for graduate students interested in ISPS technologies and related industries to
connect and learn.
In recognition of the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its potential impact on
data storage and processing, this year’s conference theme focuses on the new technology
trends in data storage devices that support IoT and big-data analysis. Additionally, thanks to
great effort and support from ASME, the 2016 ISPS Conference is co-located with the ASME
IoT Connect (IoT) conference and the InterPACK Workshop (IPW). This joint event brings
together manufacturers, hardware R&D, communications specialists, and business leaders to
explore IoT hardware, from sensors and data storage devices to the system level. ISPS
Conference attendees can access the IoT and IPW programs at no additional cost.
The 2016 ISPS Conference attracted 79 great contributions from all over the world, present-
ed in 12 breakout sessions that cover the core ISPS technical disciplines and new data
storage system trends in tribology; head/media interface; actuator/suspension and sensors;
servo control technology; shock and flow induced vibrations; spindle motors and acoustics;
micro/nano technology; mechatronics, robotics, and automation; imaging/printing technolo-
gies and consumer electronics; optical storage and future technologies; flexible media
mechanics; and tape storage.
The conference features one keynote presentation and one distinguished talk. At noon of the
first day, we are pleased to have a keynote speech by Dr. Steve Campbell, Chief Technology
Officer, Western Digital, on data storage technologies for IoT. At the ISPS banquet, the ISPS
2016 distinguished speaker Dr. Roger Wood, an HGST Fellow with Western Digital, will
deliver a speech on “The Superb Hard Disk Drive”.
ISPS 2016 would not be possible without relentless effort from volunteers, ASME ISPS
community, and ASME staff. We are extremely grateful to all ASME ISPS EC members as well
as staff members Erin Dolan, Suleyca Williams, Israr Kabir, Ty Booker, and Julia Liao for their
invaluable assistance along the way. Also, special thanks to the steering committee members
of the co-located conference, Dr. Gamal Refai-Ahmed, Mr. Ivor Barber, and Dr. Ravi V.
Mahajan, for bringing ISPS to the next stage.
Paul C.-P. Chao
Finally, we would like to thank all the participants in the conference, who are essential
contributors to the success of this event. We sincerely wish you enjoy the conference and National Chiao Tung University
have a fruitful experience at ISPS 2016. ISPS General Chair
