If a student is absent from school for more than 10 percent of school days in any one term, the student's
grade placement for the following year may be called into question, and private tutoring during and/or after
the absence may be required. When a student is absent from Lower School, he/she will be expected to make
up any work that is missed within a reasonable period of time.

        UPPER SCHOOL

        Grades 6-8
Parents should notify the Upper School Administrative Assistant of all anticipated absences, early
dismissals, and late arrivals after the start of classes.

Absences are "excused" for secondary school visits or special events (with prior approval from the Upper
School Head) and for illness. In cases of prolonged absence for medical reasons, the School requires
written documentation from a health care provider stating that the student is unable to attend school.
Students excused or absent from Upper School are expected to make up any work that is missed within a
reasonable period of time. Teachers will be expected to provide assignments, grade homework, and give
tests and exams to all students in similar fashion. Teachers will not be expected to provide tutoring or to
alter the standards or content of a course or a subject for any individual.

If an Upper School student is absent more than 10 percent of school days in any one term, whether excused
or unexcused, the student may no longer receive letter grades in classes where these absences have occurred,
but will instead receive pass/fail grades for the term instead. The pass/fail grades will be recorded on the
student’s transcript, along with a footnote recording the reason for the exception. Private tutoring may be
required to help the student with the work missed during an extended absence.

        Late Arrival and Early Dismissal
Students arriving to campus after 7:55 a.m. must have a parent or guardian sign them in at the front
desk. Similarly, students who are dismissed early must be signed out by a parent or guardian. Students
dismissed for illness must first check in with the school nurse. Students participating in independent sports
or activities may have standing permission on file to depart campus before 4:00 p.m. and, in these cases,
the in-person sign out requirement is waived.
        ALL SCHOOL
In cases of prolonged absence (more than 10 days) for medical reasons, the school requires written
documentation from a physician stating that the student is unable to attend school. In other cases a
conversation with the Division Head and/or the Head of School will be requested.

        Medical Leave

A student might, during the course of an academic year, face a serious psychological or medical situation
requiring an extended absence. In this circumstance, a family may request a medical leave for a student, and
under certain circumstances, the school may require a medical leave. Students granted or placed on medical
leave must be under the care of a doctor, psychologist or therapist and may not return to the School until
Renbrook receives a written report from a physician, psychologist or therapist to determine the student's
        readiness to return.
