F. Reports by Persons Other than Mandated Reporters
Any person other than those mandated in the Section B of this policy having reasonable cause to suspect
or to believe that any child under the age of 18 is in danger of being abused, or has been abused or
neglected, may cause a written or oral report to be made to the Commissioner of Children and Families
or his representative or a law enforcement agency. {Conn. Gen. Stat. § l7a-103}
G. Renbrook School Procedure When a Report Must Be Made
In accordance with the statutory obligations outlined above, if a faculty or staff member employed by
Renbrook School suspects child abuse or neglect, he/she will follow the procedure outlined below:
1. In cases where the child's parent or guardian is suspected of abuse or neglect, the faculty/staff
member suspecting child abuse or neglect will, within 12 hours, make an oral report to DCF or law
enforcement and the appropriate Division Head and the Head of School. Where practicable, the
faculty/staff member will notify DCF of the situation in the presence of the Division Head and/or Head
of School. A written report will follow pursuant to paragraph 5 below.
2. In cases where a school employee is suspected of child abuse, the faculty/staff member suspecting
child abuse will, within 12 hours, make an oral report to DCF. Additionally, the faculty/staff member
suspecting child abuse must notify the Head of School or the Head of School's designee. The Head of
School, or his designee, shall then immediately notify the child's parent or other person responsible
for the child's care that a report has been made. A written report will follow pursuant to paragraph 5
below. The school employee will be suspended, if necessary, in accordance with Section C, above.
3. In a case where the Head of School may be suspected of abuse, the faculty/staff member suspecting
child abuse will, within 12 hours, make an oral report to DCF, and the Chair of the Board of Trustees
must be notified. A written report will follow pursuant to paragraph 5 below.
4. The reports in steps a, b, and c must contain, if known:
a. The names and addresses of the child and his parents or other person responsible for his care;
b. the age of the child;
c. the gender of the child;
d. the nature and extent of the child's injury or injuries, maltreatment or neglect;
e. the approximate date and time the injury or injuries, maltreatment or neglect occurred;
f. information concerning any previous injury or injuries to, or maltreatment or neglect of, the
child or siblings;
g. the circumstances in which the injury or injuries, maltreatment or neglect came to be known to
the reporter;
h. the name of the person or persons suspected to be responsible for causing such injury or
injuries, maltreatment or neglect; and
i. whatever action, if any, was taken to treat, provide shelter or otherwise assist the child.
5. The faculty/staff member or the Head of School shall use DCF Form 136 to complete a
written report within 48 hours of step #1 or #2. See attached DCF Form 136.
6. The Head of School will immediately notify the child's parents about the oral report to
DCF. In cases where the child's parent is suspected as being responsible for the abuse or neglect,
the Head of School will inquire of DCF as to how it wishes to proceed and take such recommendation
into account in determining whether to notify the child's parents of the report.
