SPECIAL SERVICES
Consulting Psychologist, who shall:
5. act as advisor to administrators on any issue where they feel a need for help.
6. when requested to do so by an administrator, provide advice to faculty on any topic.
7. observe students when requested, and give feedback to faculty and/or administrators; in certain cases,
meet with an individual student, in an initial session only, for clinical impressions leading to a
recommendation.
8. provide preliminary feedback to parents when a student is under consideration; this should be fairly
brief, usually by telephone, and only once. The school cannot provide ongoing counseling or testing
services to students.
9. keep Division Heads and Head of School informed about work done with faculty, students, and parents.
Educational Evaluations
Procedure for referring families to a testing agency, a counselor, or a tutor:
If a faculty feels it is necessary to suggest tutoring, testing, or counseling to a family, the faculty should first
confer with the Division Head. The Division Head should attend the parent conference and should be the
person to make the recommendation; this is to protect the faculty from any backlash, and also to put the
school's stamp of approval on the suggestion. Faculty should not make these suggestions without an
administrator present, unless the parent brings the issue up first. Even in the latter case, the discussion
should be postponed if possible so that an administrator can be present.
If the Division Head agrees that tutoring, testing, or counseling ought to be a next step for a family, the
Division Heads maintain lists of all three of these services. It is important to present the family with a set of
choices, and not to put the school in a position of appearing to have a conflict of interest, or a "private
agreement" with someone, or even to be playing favorites among the many qualified professionals in the area.
It is the parents' responsibility to contact a professional on the list, and to make the arrangements that suit
the family best. In that way the arrangement of payments, etc. does not involve the school, but is a private
arrangement between parents and the outside resource.
The reasons for these procedures are twofold: first, to prevent the school from recommending expensive
services without due consideration in advance; and second, to prevent the school from being perceived as the
middleman in any arrangements which are made. These steps will help protect us both ethically and legally
from repercussions, which may occur later on.
