e. The nurse will always keep the front desk receptionist informed as to her location. She is
equipped with a two-way radio.
f. Students who are either injured or fall ill after the nurse has left for the day should be directed to
the person on duty at the front desk.
2. Serious illness or injury
a. If the injury or illness seems serious, or is a head or back injury, contact the nurse, a member of
the emergency team as identified by the school nurse, and the Division Head. The Division Head
will keep the Head of School informed.
b. If the injury occurs at Renbrook, consult the Parent Consent Form kept in the nurse's office. Call
the designated doctor and the parents for instructions.
c. The Parent Consent Form should always accompany the patient to the doctor or hospital. A copy
of this form will accompany each team to an away game.
d. If a serious injury or illness occurs away from school, the student will be taken to the nearest
designated medical center equipped to handle the injury. An additional adult will stay with the
team and make arrangements for transportation back to Renbrook. The faculty or coach should
contact the parents and Renbrook School with information regarding illness or injury.
e. A staff member must accompany a student to the hospital and remain until the parent arrives.
f. When a student incurs an injury or illness of any consequence, someone from the school should
call home that night to inquire about him/her. This would ordinarily be the nurse, when she has
been aware of the incident, otherwise a coach or faculty should call.
g. The nurse will follow up on a student sent home or to the hospital upon his/her return to school.
h. If a visiting student (i.e., sports team member) suffers a serious injury at Renbrook, we will assist
in having him/her transported properly to the University of Connecticut Health Center in
Farmington. We will also assist in contacting the student's parents and school.
i. If the nurse is not available, follow the regular procedures as stated in Sections 1 and 2, but in
addition:
• Stay calm for the patient's sake.
• Make him/her comfortable.
• Follow the "Standing Orders for Nurses" of the Town of West Hartford. Copies of these
orders are kept at the front hall desk, in the nurse's office, in the physical education
offices, and in the offices of the Lower and Upper School Division Heads.
3. Concern about a student's mental or emotional health
If a student shows evidence of mental or emotional problems, the Division Head should be notified
immediately. In all divisions the Division Head should be part of the decision-making process.
