พ.ศ. 2553 uang U Tapao - Muang Dong Lakhon
Ancient cities on the east coast estuaries
“Muang U Tapao” began as a canal city in the basin of Sara
Buri alluvial fans before the main waterways were extended to connect
each other in a mesh-like structure. The soil obtained from canal dredging
was used to make mounds for dwellings and performing other activities.
This was revealed by the archaeological objects scattered over the area.
Subsequently, city walls and moats were constructed to double surround
the city which was a feature of layers -- the inner wall was circular,
and the outer one was similar to a quadrilateral. The apparent evidence
includes canals, city walls and moats, as well as connected natural
waterways used for transportation and water drainage.
“Muang Dong Lakhon” was located on the hill west of Dong
Lakhon sub-district, Muang district, Nakhon Nayok Province. It was 5
14 ํ 08’ N km. southwest of the main town. The area was roughly circular, with
101 ํ 09’ E a diameter of about 2.85 km. The city was located in the middle of
the plain which was subject to flooding because of the sea. A winding
canal called Khlong Pho ran through the west side of the city and
connected to the other waterways like meshes featuring its tendency of
being easily flooded. The surrounding elliptical moats with a width and
length of 500 and 540 meters on the 4 directions of the city possessed
the floodgates and ponds. This evidence implied the settlement of this
city began in the Funan-Dvaravati Period.
