Inscriptions in Maeklong River Basin

“Muang Ku Bua” and “Muang Ratchaburi”
are ancient cities surrounded by city walls and

moats which provided important evidence for
the resettlement on the estuary coasts in Funan-
Dvaravati Period. The evidence has revealed
that the old Maeklong River (Khlong Khwae Om)

flowed out to the estuary at Khlong Wat Pradoo,
Pak Thor district, Ratchaburi Province.

water so that it stayed level with that in the
canal. After the retreat of the coastline on
the sea, it was difficult for the old Maeklong

River to flow out to the sea. A canal was;
therefore, dug to connect to the new river,

and this was expected to facilitate the flow
คลองอู่เรือ of the river to the sea. Muang Ratchaburi
บางศรีเพชร was later built on this new river bank.
