he Maeklong River
providing access to the Andaman Sea
The Maeklong River originated from the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai Rivers. Its headwaters are in the Tanaosri mountain range which functions as a
watershed and borders Thailand and Myanmar. There are two mountain passes used as ways out to the Andaman Sea, including the path starting from
the headwaters of Khwae Noi River at Sam Sop - Tha Dindaeng, going through the Three Pagodas Pass to the Andaman Sea at Mottama city,
the mouth of the Salween River and the path from Khwae Noi in Sai Yok district, Muang Sing to the west along a creek called Huay Mae Kraban,
passing through the Bong Ti border pass along the Tanaosri River to Muang Tavoy, located in a deeply indented bay similar to a dragon’s mouth, and going
out to the Andaman Sea. Used as transportation routes across the peninsula from the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman Sea, both routes have maintained
their significance for trading and strategic operations throughout history and until the present time.
The topography of the headwaters of the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai rivers are mountainous areas located in Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary. In the area,
deep water erosion had resulted in the creation of multi-level river terraces with cliffs and rapid watercourses. Both rivers flow into the Si Nakharin reservoir
before arriving at a point of confluence in Kanchanaburi where it becomes the Maeklong River, which continues flowing through the plains and the former
sea coasts in Ratchaburi Province. It finally goes into the Gulf of Thailand at Samut Songkhram Province. These areas are fertile. Several ancient cities with
city walls and moats have been found in the region, for example, Muang Ku Bua, Muang Ratchaburi and Muang Kosi Narai, etc.
